I am convinced that children can start learning reading, writing phonics, and the like much sooner than society allows them. Granted, I'm not saying kids should be sent off to school sooner than we do, but I am saying that the time they are still at home could be used to allow them to advance more quickly, and be ahead of the game when they do enter school. I also think that with the importance of computers in the world these days, it is equally important to introduce children to computers at an early age as well.
As a child, my parents were friends with a couple from South America (I can't remember where exactly) who had two young girls, about 3 and 5 years old, who were taught both English and Spanish. The kids were already fluent (as fluent as a child is at that age) in both languages.
I was fortunate enough to go to a private elementary school where I was taught French starting in the 1st grade and was fairly fluent both speaking and reading by the 6th grade.
The point I am making is that, foreign languages aside, a young child's brain is like a new sponge and I believe it is capable of consuming more than we often allow. Parents often don't have the time to spend with their children due to work.
There are so many awesome educational toys on the market now that are reasonably priced, it makes it easy for to provide your child with opportunities for early, fun learning experiences even with the time constraints of your busy life. Being the computer geek/addict that I am, the idea of introducing a computer for children at an early age, combined with teaching them the basics - alphabet, reading, writing, and basic math seems an ideal combination. If you can throw in starting to learn a second language, it's just an added bonus.
So when it came time to get a birthday present for my best friend's toddler, I went into research overdrive, and decided to present my results online: Educational Toys for Toddlers - Best Children's Laptop Computers. This site will give you several options, as well as a couple learning toys that impressed me that aren't kid's laptop computers.
Here are my top three favorites (see my site mentioned above for more info.)
|VTech Tote and Go Child's Laptop|
The Vtech Tote and Go Laptop has some great features, including a functional mouse that will work for a right or left-handed child.
|Handy Manny Construction Laptop|
I like the Handy Manny Laptop because it teaches your child basic Spanish as well. I feel knowing Spanish will become more and more important.
And here is another excellent kid's computer - Vtech Cars Lightning McQueen Learning Laptop.
The Lightning McQueen Learning Laptop features fifteen activities that teach letters, words, math and logic. It comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, LCD screen, and a fun tire-shaped mouse. Since it does have the QWERTY keyboard, it might be best for a child who already knows the alphabet, and it ready to learn the actual layout and design of a computer keyboard.
I hope these recommendations for an educational toy for a toddler are helpful.. For some additional excellent children's laptop computer options take a look at: Best Children's Laptop Computers. You will certainly be able to find one to suit your child.
Your child's mental health, as well as general health should be as important to you as your own!
